Does Mike S have a pilot's license? He'd probably buy it if he has.

Exactly. If you kept the plane in a coastal area and went offshore, you could exceed Mach 1 without violating any laws. Just be sure to file a flight plan beforehand.

I know I can't afford it, but in case I win a huge lotto, 5 million bucks after tax sounds like a bargain.

Even if he doesn't, I DO. ::hint hint:: I'd be more than happy to fly him anywhere he pleases.

Do you need a separate license for jet planes exceeding a certain speed?

And why does the price of prop planes shoots up almost exponentially when you go from single to twin props?

You'd need a type rating for that jet, not necessarily because of the speed.

It doesn't. Not sure which twins you are comparing but you can get a Piper Arrow like mine for anywhere from $50k-$100k depending on equipment and you can get Cessna 310 twins in the same price range, again depending on equipment.

Once you get up into "cabin class" twins they get into the six figures with a quickness depending on pressurization, turbo, equipment, interior, etc.

Great! So I just looked at the wrong things then. My friend is a flight instructor and have been bugging me about taking pilot lessons...

Thanks. What's a good place to look to get an idea for prices. Is there a autotrader.com kind of place?

Prices on aircraft? Or lessons? Your CFI buddy should know where to get you trained up and for how much.

For aircraft there are tons of resources. www.tradeaplane.com, ebay, controller.com and there are dozens of brokers and other resources.

If you are a brand new student pilot I would not buy a twin and learn in it. More expensive to operate, you will be hard on it as you learn, and insurance will be much more expensive.
