First off he appears too be using too large a drag chute on a short tether. As you can see from the video as soon as the chute is inflated he starts to loose control which backs up what I sad about the possible destabilisation of the rear of the car. Once the car is off line at that speed he is just a passenger on the way to the accident.

If I had specked the safety equipment on that car I would have gone with very long tether and a much smaller round land speed record type chute. This would have been a lot more stable and have and produced a softer retardation on the car.
Now that i take notice of it your probably correct. Must have been a very unsettling feeling.

An in car video might help figure out the culprit.

Bottom line is this kind of stuff happens when you play at high speeds...I am sure UR has enough experience testing gallardos at or around these speeds.

In no way do I think UR would just slap on a chute somewhere in the center of the back end. Common...

These things happen (once in a while). If its not aero-related, its a tire blowout. If its not a blowout, its the blown engine spewing oil all over the tires...

Glad the driver is alive. Huge rep to UR for building a very safe car.

It looks like he braked the same time as the deployed instead of staying on the power like you said earlier. I'm really glad the driver will be able to give a first hand account of the accident because he walked away.

Thank God he is okay.

I am no expert, but the aero on that car seemed virtually untouched- that makes me nervous. Especially when the car instinctly spins out as soon as he lifts from 250mph.

I have a great deal of respect for the engine building skills of UR. But when you start pushing these cars to those sorts of speeds you are heading into a world of unknowns. There is a good reason why the big boys spend millions in wind tunnels.

If you ask any test driver used to driving at these kinds of speeds the one thing you should never do and they will always tell you, "Never take your foot off the gas" These cars have to be eased down which is why land speed record cars have small chutes on long tethers, and too be honest not the greatest brakes in the world.

The chute on that Gallardo on that short a tether will have produced a lot of lift. It would only have taken a small loss of down force on the rear axel for that car to lose control and I suspect that is what happened. Add the fact that most peoples instincts would be to come off the gas at that point and you have a situation that becomes un-recoverable.

The cage in that car did a great job and saved the driver. But if you intend to push a short wheel base sports car to speeds it was not intended to go then expect the worse unless you completely redesign the car to do so.

I suggest a trip to Speed Week at Bonneville to see how it should be done.

^U might be correct but its difficult to judge exactly what happened from that video. I see what you are saying though...

It would be interesting to see UG chime in on their thoughts.
