On a sort-of related note, I think the idea of a supercompact luxury car is pretty neat. But this is not right.

What you people fail to realize is that this is an absolutely genius move.
1) They can reach the average fuel consumption among their range and don't have to build a shit car
2) ONLY AM owners will be able to buy one - thus, driving around in this is basically a classier way of a "My other ride is a . . ." bumper sticker that is actually true.
3) These will claim ridiculous value, should they ever end up on the open market, for reason stated in #2.
4) Most AM owners have expressed interest in a little city tool-around

Yes, you're right that ONLY AM owners can buy one - at the moment.
I have my name down on the Cygnet after being sold the 'concept' by my AM Dealer. However, the concept is great - the reality (seeing this in the flesh) is not. My dealer has confessed that they will be offering this car to the general public once 2nd hand cars start to come on the market (after 12 - 18 months). Plus, to help with their emissions figures, they actually need to sell quite a few of these to make the overall off-setting work.
The iQ is a clever little 4-seat car, no doubt. However, this version looks quite vulgar in my opinion. They should have looked at creating their own body and interior - then priced this slightly higher to justify their investment.
Aston Martin create the most beautiful cars in the world. They should be exclusive, they should be desirable. This does not deliver...
A missed opportunity. I have however, thought of a copy headline for their ads:
"Aston Martin Cygnet. It's not big, and it's not clever..."

If they only sell this to current AM-owners, this will help them to sell their big dogs.
Imagine if you were cross shopping an AMV8 and 997 C2S, and your wife got to know that if you buy the AM she could get the Cygnet!

Nor could I see a lot of AM owners actually pulling the trigger on this one as well. They'd just get some other daily.
I forecast FAIL with this one.

There are not enough AM owners to justify the real production of this car let alone ensure it's success.
...but hey, its not the first time a car company has a brain fart.
