KW Suspension gives the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG hydraulic lift
The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is without a shadow of doubt the star with the “Star”. Suspension specialist KW from Fichtenberg in Germany has now managed to perfect the handling of the Stuttgart supercar and at the same time to endow it with a distinctive level of comfort for everyday driving. With the adjustable lowering and the regulatable damping, KW offers absolutely individual suspensions for the gullwing-door coupé.
The development objective of the engineers at KW was to improve the gullwing-door model’s handling without having to sacrifice comfort. The experts have even surpassed this aim. Indeed, the SLS with the KW Variant 3 coilovers not only achieves better performance, but in fact, in comparison with the Performance Package from Mercedes-Benz, even offers the driver a wide range of adjustments for individual settings. When it comes to comfort, too, the suspension specialists have taken care not to go for compromises like the Performance Package, which shows particularly in the improved continuous-travel comfort.
KW delivers the Variant 3 coilovers with damping characteristics tuned to the SLS. The independently adjustable compression and rebound damper settings allow for an even more individualised sports suspension and thus to be adjusted perfectly to the route chosen and the driver’s personal preferences. With the new adjusting wheels, the parameters for compression and rebound damper settings can be conveniently and clearly modified right on the suspension strut. The new adjusting wheels with their scale and locking points show the exact current setup and make resetting child’s play. In addition the driver can choose for himself the lowering position anywhere across the TÜV-approved adjustment range between 10 and 35 millimetres on the front and rear axles. As a result KW gives the SLS driver the highest degree of individuality.
The high-quality workmanship of the coilovers is also demonstrated by the housing which is manufactured of high-tensile aluminium. Thus the KW suspension saves weight which in its turn has a positive effect on the driving dynamics.
The engineers from Fichtenberg also demonstrate that optimised performance is not incompatible with everyday use. In fact the Hydraulic Lift System (HLS) raises the complete vehicle at the push of a button by up to 40 millimetres. With the temporary ground clearance, underground garage exits, bumps and other obstacles can be ridden over without damaging the bodywork or the underbody. When the car reaches 80 kph, the system, which is connected to the car’s electronics, lowers the vehicle automatically again for improved driving dynamics and performance. The HLS is compatible with all coilovers.
With the Variant 3 coilovers for 3299 Euro including VAT and the Hydraulic Lift System for 7499 Euro the specialists at KW prove once again that they can improve even a supercar like the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG for the most demanding individualist – both as regards driving dynamics, as well as for everyday use.
