DJ... I've never really trusted iTunes fully when it comes to pics etc.
I connect phone to mac, iTunes will open automatically, but then open up iPhoto.
Import all from the phone via iPhoto. Then they'll open in your iPhoto library as well as being stored locally on your mac.

where are they stored? Iphoto seems like a nightmare. Once I load into iphoto I can't find them anywhere. latest solution was to export them into a folder from iphoto
