Apple Mail Help!

Trying to add a new mail box but it can't get past the initial "Add Account" stage. The email address is for Cornell "x"@med.cornell.edu. I want to set it up as POP but that doesn't really matter as I haven't been able to get to that step. Just set up the Gmail which worked fine. Don't think it matters but the hardware is an i7 MBP.

Here's the error message:
"Trying to log in to the Exchange 2007 server “autodiscover.med.cornell.edu” failed. Make sure the email address and password you entered are correct, then click Continue."

The email address, logon, and password are definitely right as they work I log on directly to the Cornell email website. I'm using:

Email Address: "x"@med.cornell.edu
User name: "x"

I've tried changing the email address to "x"@cornell.edu to no avail. Also tried using the email address as the user name.

Any help greatly appreciated!!

Here are a couple of the university resources:
Configuring Apple's OS X Mail
User SMTP - Apple Mail Configuration

The error suggests you're setting the "account type" to "Exchange 2007". Judging by their setup instructions (which are kind of out of date), you'll need to specify POP or IMAP.

The setting in question is in the second screen, immediately after specifying your name, email and password after having clicked the + button.

Failing all else, find someone else with a Mac and ask to see their settings.

Thanks Simba for the tip. I realized that you can continue even after it says trying to log on failed. It looks like there was a problem with the Incoming Mail Server and it's on Cornell's end. Sent them an email requesting the right Incoming/Outgoing Mail Servers and I'll post it up in case someone else has issues too.

Gmail started acting funny yesterday when it stopped receiving emails into the Apple Mail inbox. I rebuilt the inbox and it didn't fix it but it miraculously started working again today. Hope it stays that way. Anyway, it's as good as it'll get for now.

Works now, thanks again for the help. Found out only 3 things matter and that it's a cinch to set up, like most Apple products.

1. User name/password
2. Incoming/Outgoing server
3. POP vs. IMAP

Ended up having a problem with step two. Now it works like a dream again.

Cheers!
