apple mail confusion

I can't figure out how to get Mail to stop putting email into 'groups' or subgroups..I shut off smart mailboxes but I don't want my mail organized at all by this system.

Ur.. what "groups"? It'll dump messages into a given account mailbox by default.

not groups but arrows that point > to messages and when clicking on that it reveals other emails below.

I want all emails to be left alone not put together by this...I thought it was a feature of 'smart mailboxes' and I turned that feature off. But it still does it.
