AT&T: Everyone likes a loser.

In a move of general stupidity beyond belief, AT&T is doing away with the $30 flat rate data plan that every iPhone in the US currently uses.

AT&T Inc. will stop letting new customers sign up for its unlimited Internet data plan for smart phones and iPads, hoping to ease congestion on its network by charging the people who use the most data more.

The move comes just in time for the expected unveiling of Apple Inc.'s new iPhone next week.

Current subscribers will be able to keep their $30-per-month unlimited plans, even if they renew their contracts. But starting Monday, new customers will have to choose one of two new data plans for all smart phones, including iPhones and BlackBerrys.

With the change, AT&T is adopting a carrot-and-stick approach to assuage the data congestion on its network, which has been a source of complaints, especially in cities such as New York and San Francisco that are thick with iPhone users.
Expect a CDMA iPhone/iPad on Verizon and/or Sprint "soon".

Thats probably why they did it. Thinking "We might as well make as much profit as we can before we lose exclusivity."

They did that by more than doubling their contract termination fees already.

This is just stupid business at work. You sell X. In this case, X happens to be bandwidth. You have a LOT of people who want to give you money for X so long as you keep the X coming. So instead of buying and selling more X, you tell everyone who is already buying X that X now costs more, so they buy less.

One wonders how someone achieves a C-level executive position in a large telecommunications company without having achieved a basic understanding of economics.

Oh well, at least I get to buy an iPhone now.

I guess I'll be keeping my data plan for a while until an LTE iPhone comes (aka mobile VOIP). True 4G will be a beautiful thing...

I prefer these tiered plans since I doubt I'll ever hit these higher brandwith levels.

The whole telecom market is one big joke right now. Get the best phones with the worst plan/service/coverage or get shitty phones with good service/coverage. No matter what, the customer gets screwed.

The whole industry would be far better off if every phone was available with any service provider. That would just leave price and service as the only variables and everyone would be happy.
