One won't over-write the other.
The problem is that if I sync the Calendar from my Exchange account at work, it will overwrite the .me/.mac iCal calendar I have with my home stuff and my wife's stuff.

I was told that I couldn't selectively download only my mail and not contacts and the calendar from the Exchange server (from a Apple store drone no less!) which is not true. So, I now sync my Exchange email only and my .me email, iCal, and Contacts. And, since my Entourage will send appointments over the iCal, it works out pretty well.

BTW, I obviously did get an iPhone. For my purposes, it kicks my BB's butt by supporting Exchange active sync and by allowing push synching of my iCal and contacts.

Wait... I synch my Cal from iCal/.me & from Exchange. I can have both onmy phone with no overwrite. They are just colored differently, and I can select whether I want to see events from either one individually, or both .me and Exchange events together on my iPhone calendar.

Why will yours overwrite? Have you tested it to make sure?

Yes. If I have my iPhone sync my mail and contacts from Exchange, it overwrites my .me iCal and contacts. So, I have my iPhone synching my Exchange email only and my .me email/iCal/contacts. I see all my calendars in different colors on my iMac and my iPhone.

Actually...as I understand what's happening (please correct me if I'm wrong Simba) is that iCal on your iMac is synching to Exchange (through Outlook or Entourage, right?) and then the iCal on your iMac is synched to mobileme...I'm pretty sure.
