Tradition = the future!
At Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, the feature marques are numerous each year. In 2013, it will be:
FEATURED MARQUES
Lincoln Custom Coachwork
Vanvooren Coachwork
Simplex
Aston Martin Centennial
Lamborghini
Porsche 911
BMW 507
French Motorcycles
Several months ago the Concours organizers approached the usual suspects (PCA, Gerry Seinfeld...their Porsche Roledex is notoriously small) and a few owners of 1963 vintage 901's were asked to show their early vin # cars...except most (if not all of those) are 1964 or 1965 production cars! Several German Porsche enthusiasts I talked about re: the factory's slow rolling/ slower moving 50th Anniversary campaign are puzzled why 2013 was chosen for this important date. Only one prototype of the 901 was put together for the Frankfurt Auto in 1963. The car presented at the auto show had a non-operational mockup of the 901 engine, receiving a working one in February 1964! Actual series production of the 911 actually started later on 1964! My old 1965 356 C cabriolet was built at Werk II in early 1965, among the last 356 that left the factory! So 1964 would have made sense for starting counting the earliest 911 made at Zuffenhausen ...and 2014 the year to celebrate fifty after that!
But there you have it - the 911 Fifty Anniversary in 2013! And the Anniversary faithful will get hosed financially. The special 50th Anniversary 991 Edition has not yet been fully announced. It will come in very late, just before the new 2014 MY 991 starts to roll off the lines in June of 2013. We are already finishing bloody May..and I have not heard yet the announcement for this special model So when it comes, will it suffer the depreciation of being a '13 just as other customers are receiving their '14's 991's?
Saludos,
Eduardo
