We went through the whole oil consumption business with the 997s awhile back on Rennlist. The vast majority of 997 owners never add any oil, while a few of us have to routinely add oil. I'm still trying to get a handle on what my usage rate is today. It was using it at 1 quart every 1000 miles for a long time. I'm at about 32,000 miles today and oil mileage is now around 1 quart every 1800 miles. How you break-in the engine makes no difference. Some engines just use oil. It's got to be either the valve guides or the rings.

Yeah, bad engine design that's been around since the '60s and won Le Mans more than any other car manufacturer.
The owner's manual in the earlier air-cooled cars says 1 qt per 500 miles is normal, and that's after it's broken in. The main reason for this is that b/c the motor is horizontally opposed, you will always have some oil that's sitting in the cylinder after the car is shut-off. Once you fire it back up, the rings will scrape that oil and some of it will get pumped up and out of the combustion chamber.
I wouldn't sweat it. The consumption will go down, but it will always burn a little bit. It's normal.
