997 Turbo S - Turbos broken & error codes
Hi All -
Any insight into why would be greatly appreciated -
I have a 2011 997 Turbo S with 17K miles. Car has been serviced regularly and certainly has not been beaten on.
I added an FVD exhaust and a friend installed a EVOMS tune program and the car was great for about two weeks. Car was garaged for about two weeks when I went on vacation on a battery tender.
When I came back from vacation, I noticed the car stopped getting any boost. 0 PSI - which as a turbo owner, you know is a terrible thing.
So, service guy said one turbo had a rod for the vanes which bent and the other turbo seized completely from rust?? They got one turbo repaired but I had to replace the other and it certainly comes at a hefty price tag for a car out of warranty.
Anyone have experience with these types of issues? Is this normal wear and tear? My service guy says this is a fluke happening and it has nothing to do with the exhaust and tune I installed.
Error codes read as follows:
P0234 Boost pressure control limit exceeded
P0607 DME control unit faulty: reset
P1253 Boost pressure adjustment range b1
P1257 Boost pressure adjustment range adjustment unit b2
P1552 Function monitoring: CU fault group a
P1373 Valve lift adjustment - one bank in wrong lift
My other question is around - is this turbo damage something that can be prevented? Is it expected with turbo porsches that the turbos will need to be changed during the life of the car?
Between this and the carbon brakes which I will need to eventually change/service - the cost of ownership of such a "rock solid" car as the Porsche gets a lot higher.
If the boot pressure limit is exceeded one time, can that be the root cause??? I read someplace that these turbos can handle up to thousands of pounds of pressure..... Any insight into the reason why the typically bullet proof turbos in my car were damaged would be greatly appreciated.

Did you ever resolve the issue with the check engine codes you listed? If so, were you able to confirm if they were related to the FVD exhaust and tune?
I have a 2010 997.2 Turbo with 89k miles, that has also been maintained well, with no issues outside of normal maintenance. I purchased the car 2 years ago with 75k miles on it. At the time of purchase it had an FVD muffler that I was aware of. I was unaware it had FVD cats and Stage 1 tune. When I found out about the FVD cats earlier this year, I upgraded to the FVD Stage 2 tune.
Since I added the Stage 2 tune, I recently started experiencing a whistling noise coming from the engine on acceleration. No lights were popping up and the car seemed to run fine, but I took it to the dealer to find out what it was before something failed. They scanned the vehicle for faults and found: P1257 Boost Pressure Adjustment Motor Below Limit, stormed in the DME. After inspecting the passenger side waste gate actuator, they found that it was seized/stuck open. They replaced the actuator and connecting rod.
From there, I picked the car up, test drove it for a few miles and the noise seemed to be gone. I put the car in the garage, and went out of town for 2 weeks. Upon returning, I took the car out, and within the first 15 miles, I had a PSM failure light pop up, along with a flashing check engine light. The flashing check engine light eventually turned solid, PSM failure light went away and the car started shaking pretty bad, in the rear. I immediately took it back to the dealer. The dealer is now stating I have a new code indicating a bad Valve Lift Switch Bank 2 (the part to replace is called an electronic actuator). I believe this is the P1373 code you had.
The dealer has yet to confirm if this has anything to do with my tune, but says the two issues are not related an a coincidence. I just find it odd that you had two of the same codes pop up shortly after installing the same tune.
Any insight you have would be appreciated.
