Downshifting
#35
I'm sorry but if your brake pads/rotors are lasting that long, you're driving like a little bitch. Doesn't matter how good you are at downshifting. If you're not going fast enough to need your brakes, you're doing it wrong.

Ohhhhhh, the sweet music of a broken in Remus exhaust
I have yet to see someone downshift regularly while stopping. it leads to unnecessary jolting, which is nauseating for the passengers

....unlesss you've mastered the craft, like Stoppie

Dear Ferrari owners,
Do you downshift ur ferrari to gear 1? I test drove my friend's 430 and i was told not to downshift to gear 1 as there is no need too. And i tried a few times and the car jerk like it want my organs to misplace.
Hope anyone can clarify this for me. Or does this only applied to the 430 and not on 458 and ff?
Thanks guys

2. i never felt the jerk you speak of but i generally keep the car in 2nd with the gas pedal at bumps/slow traffic so i can have a heavier ride and thus be more comfortable
3. you sure the clutch on your friend's 430 is not worn out?
the post labour of installation that includes programming, calibrating, and bleeding the system is not something to overlook lightly in my opinion and experience
if it were a 6speed shifter, i would downshift to slow the car down but not all through the gears just to not touch the brakes .. you guys must have great roads and traffic to think and be able to do that, here that would be silly
This isn't about what you THINK. It's about fact. I've gotten brakes to last 70-80k easy with a manual transmission car. And I've yet to replace a clutch on any of my previous manual cars with less than 130k on them.
SHIFTING is for those who know wtf they're doing, which clearly, you do not. (you replace the clutch, not rebuild the transmission on a M/T. If you need to rebuild it you're DOING IT WRONG!!!!)

2. op is talking about f1 cars, which will have the tcu downshift for you no matter what if rpm drops

Basic logic: if you use the brakes less, they wear less. Therefore they last longer.
And Stoppie is correct. You don't rebuild a manual unless you seriously F something up. You get a new clutch
No rules on how you have to drive, personally I prefer to use the trans to slow the vehicle down instead of using/riding the brakes.

stop and go traffic probably the biggest deterrent for downshift stop.
it requires ideal conditions.
