2016 Porsche 911 R

Auction-bound rare 911 R is 716 of 991 made, has only 463 miles on its 500-horsepower 4.0-liter flat-six.

Back in 2016, Porsche gave the 991.1-era of its iconic 911 a proper send-off before the 991.2 era arrived for the 2017 model year. That send-off was none other than the 2016 Porsche 911 R. According to Car and Driver, the 911 R placed a lightweight body upon the same 500-horsepower, 4.0-liter flat-six from the then-current GT3 RS.

Only 991 of these special 911s were built and sold around the world. Bring a Trailer happens to have one up for bidding on its pages, No. 716 from Connecticut, and it’s a stunner.

The sleek look of this gorgeous 911 R is timeless, and this particular vehicle was reportedly a one-owner example. And from the looks of it, that owner babied this magnificent machine like it deserves. Giving its sophisticated white and black-trimmed exterior a splash of excitement is a red center stripe that was offered then (green was also an option, and both were “a throwback to 1967,” per Car and Driver). This Porsche is also a low-mileage machine, having only put down 463 miles since it was delivered to New Country Porsche in Greenwich, Connecticut, sometime around the summer of 2016.

While more than a few of the 2016 911 Rs had polished forged aluminum GT3 wheels, No. 716 wears a set dipped in the blackest black. Wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2s, each one of the 20-inch wheels is placed over a ceramic composite brake with yellow calipers for immense stopping power. Meanwhile, the 911 R’s active suspension kept those wheels planted firmly on the ground.

Inside, the 911 R greets you with its Tarpan Brown and Black leather interior, the seats featuring houndstooth cloth for extra coolness points. The carbon fiber/black leather shifter knob waits for you to row through the six gears of the Porsche’s manual transaxle, and cloth door handles are among some the lightweighting touches to help make this car fly higher than the rest.

The magic, of course, is behind the driver. The 4.0-liter flat-six breaths without the aid of turbos or superchargers, the most powerful engine of its kind from Porsche at the time. All of those ponies, plus 338 lb-ft of torque, all encased in a 3,020-pound body, only means one thing: you’re going to have a great time no matter where you drive.

There’s so much going for this rare 911 R, including its low mileage, excellent maintenance record, and the fact it’s never been in a wreck. All we’d like to see is the next owner give the flat-six more exercise. It sounds too good to keep quiet.
