They were built for COMEX divers (French commercial divers). They even helped Rolex develop the helium escape valve on the sea dweller. A good read on the subject with good examples here.

Thanks for the info. Last week when I was reading about Bob Barth and SEALAB and the sea dweller I thought it was cool, the relationship between private sector and people giving information from their experience. I bet now everything is developed on computer simulation and in labs.
