When does your collection require a Rolex?

So, I'm building a small collection of nice timepieces. Not that it is a rule, but I tend to pick up watches in the 5-15k range. I've always considered a Rolex to be an old man's watch (my dad had one and he was definitely and old man - still is). The more I think about it though, they are great pieces, and seemingly bulletproof. I've seen a couple that I like (Explorer I and Milgauss)...maybe I'm becoming the old man.

My question is this.
1. At some point do should you really add a Rolex (obviously if you hate them, no, but they provide versatility that some other don't - for example a trip to Europe with business meetings and days out in jeans).
2. Are the Explorer I and Milgauss good examples that will hold their value well?

If you want a Rolex that is very desireable, sporty and versatile for formal and casual attire; I would recomend the Submariner or the GMT2.

The Explorer 1 is not my favourite, but the Milgaus is great you should look at the Black dial. The Explorer 2 is nice but try it, might be too sporty (big).

I've never really liked Rolex, I just like the Daytona and wanted one for many years. Finally in 2010 I got one after much hesitation and I can tell you its a great watch to wear it daily and its very versatile; in addition its robust for daily abuse and wears comfortable.

If you want a bracelet watch, you have tried it on, and you like it- buy one. There are no rules. Be prepared to see them everywhere. I was killing time at a Starbucks on the local undergraduate campus and saw a student wearing a Daytona.

Also, I've nevered paid MSRP for a piece. Does that same logic apply to Rolex or do ADs maintain suggested price?

When you want one.

Thus far, I've only ever considered buying a GMTII, but only because its such a functional watch.
