How could u not fall in love with the 007 Submariner featuring High Intensity Magnetic Field (indicated by the markings on the dial turning red) and marine grade rope cutter (hi-speed bezel-dial rotation)

Dana, AWESOME story
Kevin, "it makes time personal" dude i'm gonna be using that!!
Ara, love the story, how old were you when you got your big pilot?
falgo,
wish your kid all the best with his grad studies
personally, my dad always wore his 1978 datejust which my grandfather (mom's dad) got him as his wedding gift so i always had it in my mind that i must get a rolex in the future. was never that interested at the time in watches since i was all about sports cars.
when i graduated from univ (`04), i had other things in mind (1st ferrari) so i did not start until i completed my masters in sep '06 that i treated myself to a GMT II coke dial in july 2007. i started making decent money from my job (for my age)
more work meant less time in cars, and i caught the watch bug online. learning about them i was in awe of everything related to the industry.
sep `06 - july '08 was a pretty awesome time in the kuwaiti stock exchange, a friggin gold mine. i was putting 100% of what i earned from work in my portfolio and speculating = exponential growth = extra funds = more things to splurge on.
bought a yachtmaster in dec 2007 and two R129s
i thought i had all the watches i needed in the world.
then the financial crisis struck. it hit us in the kuwait stock exchange worse than you guys, thank god i never dealt in derivatives, but i still needed to feel like i'm doing okay and i can enjoy myself.
so i went to london to watch arsenal vs barcelona in the champions league + man utd vs chelsea. and when i came back, i said FVCK IT and got me an AP panda.
took a break from watches for a while since i got married (received a Corum Romvlvs as a gift from a dear friend). finished furnishing and all marriage expenses. got a rolex daytona. then saved up when i learned we were pregnant. before my daughter was born, i saw the GP carbon in real for the 1st time (was not a big fan in pics) and loved it. two weeks later i treated myself to it as a new dad.
here's the thing: watches are definitely more worth buying than cars. they are to be enjoyed daily, and if taken care of, are trouble and expense free.
and watches are definitely more sound, to me at least, nowadays than trying to bring down my cost in my portfolio because the `08 FC taught me one of the most important lessons in life:
if you don't enjoy your money, having more of it is not enjoyable one bit.
besides, right now, if i want to sell all my watches, i would have more cash than what i paid for them over the years .. so why more men aren't realizing that watches are the best things to buy is beyond me
currently, i am looking at a-nice-watch-money to get one of my cars to tip top shape, and while i love it to death i now know that i am more keen on watches than cars because of all of the above reasons + watches are EXTREMELY personal and they grant you a sense of satisfaction no car or trip can

biggest influence for me (still not a HUGE watch guy) has been car forums. I never really knew the two went hand-in-hand like they seem too......
second biggest influence was James Bond. Always seemed to have EVERYTHING a man could want - including a cool watch with lazers and razors etc

I was strolling thru Hobokan (yon's stomping grounds) one day years back and this cat in a dark trench coat sauntered up to me from an alley and said "pssst ! Wanna buy a watch?"
Been hooked ever since

Started with a present for my 15 birthday, a quartz festina loved it ! Sadly it was a compelte POS that as always a trouble...
Then I discovered nixon and got me a mellor, I was also in a engineer science class in colledge and I was interested in everything mechanic (I always have).
My god father lives 15min away from geneva, everytime I went there I saw all the big watch maker factory (like rolex) and at that time I discovered Patek Phillipe. It was a true shock to me, never saw anything that beautifull and technical, the true definition of art.
I discovered this forum too (while searching videos of F40)and saw all the eye candy you guys wore everyday!
For my 18th birthday my parents bought me a nixon player, well it's not a mechanical watch but I absolutely love it!
I know some day I'll get myself a proper watch ( please stop with the IWC porn I'm not gonna resist longer), my absolute dream is a PP 5140R, but like you I'll wait to have a proper situation!
