SIHH 2009: Panerai Radiomir Egiziano Watch
By Adam Keith, Associate Timepiece Editor for ViaLuxe-
The Radiomir Egiziano watch is a bold new 2009 addition from Officine Panerai, which faithfully recreates a special model that Panerai manufactured in extremely small numbers for the Egyptian Navy during the 1950's.
Brushed titanium is employed for the imposing case of the Panerai Radiomir Egiziano watch, which measures no less than 60mm across. Like the original Egyptian Navy timepiece, the 2009 Radiomir Egiziano watch utilizes the characteristic Panerai crown security device, and a rotating bezel that is bi-directional in operation. The matte black "sandwich" dial displays luminous material whose slightly yellowed color creates an impression of patina.
The original Panerai watch for the Egyptian navy utilized an Angelus hand-wound movement with an 8-day power reserve. Officine Panerai keeps the 8-day tradition alive through the use of its own in-house P.2002 caliber, whose long power reserve is assured by a system of three spring barrels. The P.2002 caliber features a glucydur balance borne upon an adjustable bridge. Balance frequency is 28,800 vibrations per hour.
Production of the Panerai Radiomir Egiziano watch will be limited to a series of 300 pieces. The timepiece is fitted with a thick leather strap and a flat titanium "GPF-Mod Dep" tang buckle. Water resistance of the Radiomir Egiziano is 300 meters.
