I didn't read every post so sorry if this is a repeat. But I would get a Cartier Santos. Best looking watch for the money with a great automatic movement.
This stainless steel version is just outside of your budget. You could certainly find a used one for less than $3,000 or even a new one for close to $3,000 if you scoured the net.

Check out this deal.

Pretty good.
Of course, on all watch issues always ask Stryke.

The occasional comments about Tag's reliability keep popping up. I bought a Carrera whilst still on this 6mo sandbox fieldtrip, so I can't yet comment first hand, but there seems to be a consensus that Tag is a good buy. Tag carrera, aquatimer, or monaco are all nice pieces. Find a Monaco Gulf edition and you will get some nice comments on the watch.
You can also pick up a Montblanc or Omega in that price range, definetly not as ubiquitous as the Tag. The PAM you find for 3k, you will not want in 3 years.
Specifically for your situation, I'd consider hawking the Link and using the extra cash to get out of Tag and into something nicer. GL
