What is the best way to call from France?
Prepaid phone card from here? Buy one there? Do they work from the hotels or pay phones?
I got a thing from Amex Travel that is with RailEurope. I just hate all the "might not work, extra charges" stuff.

The best way is to use a land line. It was robbery a few years ago to make international calls from France but these days it's not too bad at all.
But assuming you have a tri/quadband cellphone, I don't see why it wouldn't work? There are about 6 or 7 providers to choose from wherver you are.

i've always just bought pre-paid phone cards over there. i don't think they're that expensive. i think i paid 20 euro for 90 minutes or so.
and yes they work from both pay phones or the hotel phone in your room.

Skype is a good choice. When in Europe I usually go the prepaid SIM card route. I have a Quad band GSM phone that I take with me and just stick the International SIM card in there. I then have a fully functional cell phone while travelling.
