Nightfall is an unknown quantity at this point
chuck- had fun reading through your blog. A slice of life most dont get or think to see...really interesting. few questions though..

- do the restaurants/chefs know you're a "critic" of sorts? i read you mentioned having notes, so they must know you arent a casual diner.
- do you visit all these places by yourself? or maybe with a group of friends to get more variety of dishes?
- whats the attire at most of these places? i'd assume they are all somewhat formal but perhaps not....

some places know me, some places don't. the camera and notes probably tip them off that i'm a bit more serious than the average dine. likewise, there are ways to let them know you expect more.

i've got a few friends that like to eat out so i can usually find somebody. the dishes in most of these places are usually smaller so you can order a lot more.

it all depends. there are only a handful of restaurants in the US that a suit is required. in Paris, a suit is mandatory. in the French countryside, you can get away w/ jeans. in Spain, you can wear jeans (and sometimes get away w/ shorts.) restaurants realize that people want to eat more casually so the days of suit and tie are almost over.

that said, lately i've found it easier to just throw on a suit when i go out to some place nicer. sometimes i feel uncomfortable in jeans, sometimes i don't...
