houston may have nicer people but im not a big fan of the city. up here (dallas) you will find the attribute you mentioned but i find it to be a classier city in general. of all the cities in texas dallas is by far my favorite. plus, the women here are spectacular. anyone that has been up here can attest.

i think the moment i decided i was out on austin was when i was sitting in one of their restaurants with someones dog licking my leg and dog hair floating around (they are allowed in many places) and i just thought to myself how wannabe cali/liberal/granola that place is. dallas may be full of pretentious pricks but at least we know what we are and embrace it.

I love Austin, but it really doesn't feel like TEXAS! I personally think Austin is as close to Northern California as you get, without being in Northern Cali!

You can say that it's filled with hippie greenos (which there are a lot), but that is a lazy generalization. The Austin I know consists of die hard Texans of every kind. We do have a lot of Cali refuges and they seem to be flooding in by the day. h20, whether its good for the economy or not, its too much at times.
Lived in Dallas for five years and did find the place a little full of itself. Its a city that thinks it's a flashier LA. That being said, it's fun to visit, but I'd rather not live there again. Just my $.02. Like many in this thread, I am generalizing a bit. Maybe its that while I grew up in the heart of Houston, I spent much of my younger life on ranches and at the lake house (then it was not so developed) so maybe I'm more comfortable outside of a major city. For me Austin provides the perfect balance of metropolitan city and outer 'country' atmosphere.
Native Texan Here!!
EDIT: I want to clarify that I'm not knocking Northern California, it's could be the most beautiful part of this country. I'm just a die hard Texan and don't agree with the comparison...just my opinion.

^^^ Out of all the cities in Texas, Austin seems less Texas than all of them, and I am not the only person to have made this statement. Being the State Capital does not make it "more Texas"... Is Sacramento a good representation of the State of California? No! I don't want to argue this topic as I have only visited Austin for 3-4 days at a time, but I did grow up in Northern Cali and most people who mention visiting Austin talk about how similar it is to Norcal.
