Italy in the spring

I'm thinking about going to Italy in April or May. Rome and Venice are my main destinations. Seems like Alitalia has the lowest fares and the only carrier with direct flights from Chicago to Rome. Any recommendations on airlines and hotels? I was searching for a more romantic and eclectic B&B setting as far as lodging goes, especially in Venice. I'm thinking about 7-10 days for the entire trip. thanks!

Of course Alitalia can't buy gas to put in their planes right now, but don't let that deter you . . .
