Jimi Hendrix (November 27, 1942 – September 18, 1970) was an American guitarist, singer and songwriter.
Hendrix is considered one of the greatest and most influential guitarists in rock music history.
After initial success in Europe, he achieved fame in the USA following his 1967 performance at the Monterey Pop Festival.
Later, Hendrix headlined the iconic 1969 Woodstock Festival.
Hendrix helped develop the technique of guitar feedback with overdriven amplifiers.
He was influenced by blues artists such as:
B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Albert King, and Elmore James, rhythm and blues and soul guitarists Curtis Mayfield, Steve Cropper, as well as by some modern jazz.
Hendrix is also widely thought to have been influenced by Pete Townshend of The Who, who performed in London when Hendrix started his career there in 1966.
Carlos Santana has also suggested that Hendrix's music may have been influenced by his Native American heritage.
As a record producer, Hendrix also broke new ground in using the recording studio as an extension of his musical ideas;
he was one of the first to experiment with stereophonic and phasing effects during recording.
Hendrix won many of the most prestigious rock music awards in his lifetime and has been posthumously awarded many more,
including being inducted into the USA's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005.
An English Heritage "Blue plaque" was erected in his name on his former residence at Brook Street, London in September 1997
and his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (at 6627 Hollywood Blvd.) was dedicated in 1994. In 2006, his debut USA album, Are You Experienced,
was inducted into the United States National Recording Registry and Rolling Stone named Hendrix number 1 on their list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time

The greatest there ever was!
I have Hendrix on disc in the GT3 for whenever I am going to break into the triple digits, it performs better with him as a co-pilot.
I would like to think that Heaven is just one big open jam that he's hosting and although I can't play anything, I hope to get a seat down in front!

Nice call, MTK.“The story of life is quicker then the blink of an eye, the story of love is hello, goodbye.” - Jimi Hendrix
To this day, all of the rock music I have expored, still nothing compares to Jimi... I discovered Hendrix when I was in 6th grade, courtesy of my older brother, and was obessed w/ his music ever since. It was Hendrix's genious that inspired me to learn to play guitar (and bass) when I was young.
When I was in junior high school I was buying import albums like "Band of Gypsies", "Cry of Love", "Live at Isle of White", etc... this was back in the 80's when Jimi's albums were largely limited to a handful of records released in the US (as his estate was in legal limbo with his father, the record co's, etc). Since then, a shedload of his music, studio takes, live concerts, re-released record that "would have been" have come out, making the bulk of his music widely available. A lot of it has been repackaged - some of it w/ good intentions, some of it less so.
The video "Jimi Hendrix: Live at the Monterey Pop Festival" was a revelation for me, musically. It is a must-see video for any rock music fan. Noel Redding was a side show, but Mitch Mitchell on drums was pure heaven - mixing in a jazz-trained drummer into the fold of "The Experience" was brilliant.
Also, the Band of Gypsies' Live at Fillmore East I think was one of his greatest performances, albeit a bit dark. Sadly, the BoG drummer, Buddy Miles, just passed away a few weeks ago.
A series of photos taken by Jim Marshall from the 1967 Monterey Pop Fesival are my favorites, back when Jimi was styling the perm. Here's one...
