SoCal is an unknown quantity at this point
I am left handed as well, but right eye dominant. So, I shoot both pistol and rifle ambidextrously. However, I recommend trying both and training both as you never know when you will need it. Just my $0.02...

So you would recommend both the Stag model 8L, and the HK MR556 for me?

Sounds good to me.

Back on topic though,

It sounds like we are all in agreement that Stag and Daniel Defense make a good weapon. No matter which manufacturer you go through the furniture you get will still work to make it your own.

Ok... Opinion on the Sig 516 SWAT?

I looked at one at my local gun shop today, and really liked what I saw and felt.
It comes with the quad rail and a red dot optic. It was $1350.

I know Sig makes quality in all other firearms, so is it true here?
It has a lifetime warranty which gave me a good warm fuzzy too...

The rifle just felt "right" to me. I almost bought it, but because it's so final, I decided to do a little research on it first.

Opinions?

Also, I looked at DPMS that was pretty nice feeling as well, but didn't feel as good as the Sig to me. I know that's all subjective without shooting them, but you know that gut feeling you get? The they both gave me a positive feeling in my gut, but the Sig *really* did.

Scott, in all due respect, I'd avoid most things Sig now of days. The stuff that came from Western Germany is rock-steady, but with their most recent CEO from Kimber, I've really lost confidence in them. However, if you feel the carbine feels right in your hands, then by all means proceed forward

Yeah, I know it's not quite the same, but I still like Sig.

Don't worry about offending me either. I want straight scoop.

Here's a pic of the rifle exactly how it looks with rails and stock and all.
The stock is Magpul. The optic is actually made by iTAC. It's a mid to low level optic... about $150 as stand alone, but ok for me to start.

Scott, I own a DPMS, S&W MP 15, and an LWRC. For the price range you are targeting, the Smith is very nice.

some .50 caliber pins in sabots coming out of a 20" barrel at mach 10...

Or just some reinforcing re-bar doing the same thing, whichever floats your boat.
