I think your wife is right!
ETA: I'm not up to speed on the latest zombie developments, but if they're stil slow and lumbering, then I choose this, so I can survive in style:

You also have to think that when you run out of ammo, can you easily find 7.62 or 5.56? I don't know if it is sold in stores. I personally like the rilfe I found on Left 4 Dead 2: heavy stopping power, sniping scope and mobile. I'll see if I can figure out what it was.

My choice would be TDI's Kriss Super V, lightweight, durable and great for close combat or mid-range.

A rifle that fires 5.56 will also fire .223, .223 is just loaded to a lower pressure normally. Same with .308 and 7.62 NATO, except .308 is the higher pressure load. I can buy .223 or .308 at Walmart, Meijer, or Dick's sporting goods, all within a couple miles of my house. They are by far some of the most common rifle calibers around.

Not 100% complete. A 556 can fire a 223 safely, but a 223 should NEVER fire a 556 (unless you are intentionally looking for bad things to happen).

223 & 308 are very popular cartridges as Brett said.

I'd prefer to not let those damn zombies get close. I'm with stuka on my choice of weapons

LOL, you and your damn shotgun.

I think the EDM SS-97 in .408 Cheytac would be a fun gun to have in a zombie scenario. ELR goodness...with good glass you get to see the effects w/out having to deal with the mess.
