Definitely check your states regulations on wildlife. Some states mandate the smallest caliber you can use on game.

I love the .30-.30. it was my first gun, also the first larger sized round rifle I've shot. its a great brush gun like SoCal C4S said and if a 10 year old can fire it, I'm sure it will work for you.

For an all around great gun without spending a fortune Remington Model 700™ SPS™ Buckmasters® Edition Get it in .270.
Add a nice scope (don't go cheap on the mounting) and you're set.

For a brushy area Marlin Model 336W Good ol' 30/30. Quick, no recoil, killed more Bambi's than any other caliber I'll bet. 30/30 is much more capable than in years past thanks to Hornady's Leverevolution ammo.
