Gun Guys ITT

So, I've decided to pull the trigger
on a Semi-Automatic Rifle.
I'm pretty sure I will be looking for an SKS.
The criteria I'm under is;
The gun isn't ultra expensive or complicated.
The Ammo is Relatively Cheap.
But I have to admit, I'm a noob when it comes to this stuff...
So, my question is, am I looking at the right gun?
When shopping what should I be looking for or avoiding?
Any advice is appreciated.

I'm kind of in the same boat as you right now. Looking at AR's and AK's, there are so many options out there it's hard to know which to choose. I also don't want to spend a ton of $$ but don't want a POS either.

And you found cheap 7.62? Post that up in the ammo sticky!

If you're buying an old SKS (not sure if they make new ones), make sure to check the condition of the barrel.
Edit: You can use a flashlight to help you see inside the barrel.

Ditto. Maintenance is easier on an AK, and the mods to make an SKS handle an AK magazine can be a pain in the arse. Also, the SKS is heavy. Try to avoid Egyptian AKs. . .Russian, Yugoslav, Chinese, N. Korean, Czech, etc. will be your best bet.

Tough to find cheap ammo and cheap semi-auto rifles around this time...
Do you want an 'assault rifle' or just semi-auto? Consider the Ruger Mini-14 in .223. Relatively cheap to shoot vs. other rifle calibers. Still not THAT cheap. The guns are easier to found nowadays than the black rifles and still fun to shoot.

Can you recommend a good "brand" for an AK? I am looking at Bulgarian and Russian ones. Are most companies relatively the same or are there certain ones to look for?

Ant, you can find a good AR or AK for under a grand. And you can get an AK in a 556 or 545 round.
BUT, if you've got a nice cheap source for 762, I'd get all over that. $199 for a thousand rounds is pretty good. What manufacturer is the question...

There is some nasty stuff out there.

Krebs, these guys are not joke and are at the upper end of the AK spectrum.
Welcome to Krebs Custom - The Ultimate Expression of System Kalashnikov
The Robinson Arms XCR is, believe it or not, an AK variant, and a BADASS rifle:

Or just about any Bulgarian, Russian, Chinese, Yugo, Hungarian or Polish AK are great options. But many people have realized this, and their prices have gone up.
If it were me in the market for an AK right now, it'd be either a Krebs or a Robinson XCR.
