Gun Guys ITT

Bushmaster - Welcome to Bushmaster Fireams International
They have good guns for around $1,000. Also, .223 ammo is pretty cheap. Plus there is enough aftermarket support to do whatever you want for it.

I'm looking for something with a bit more substance.

Still kinda leaning toward an SKS...
This was the Ammo deal my Neighbor was talking about.
Cabela's -- Bulk Wolf Military Classic 7.62 x 39mm Ammo
Not sure if Wolf is that great? From what I've read they are ok.
$219 for 1,000

Get an SKS!
They are fun, cheap and there are lots of cool modifications out there. There's different stocks you can get as well that will change the feel and look of the gun dramatically. Just try to get the more reputable parts, I had an aftermarket dust cover(with scope rings) crack on me which was pretty lame...piss poor metal being used. But there is also some good machined stuff out there too.
They also make detachable magazines which I must admit takes some getting use to. Maybe 5 min of practice to get it down right. Some may even require a little force at first, or even grinding with a dremel (not that id know, i live in CA). Also, depending on where you live, you might want to look into the laws of what you can and cant do modification wise.

note, this is not mine.
