Yes, you are correct! The Zonda F that beat the Veyron were wearing Pilot Sport Cups which are full blooded race tires used in endurance races like 24h Le Mans. The Zonda F on comparable Pilot Sport 2 is however the slowest of the bunch. Slower than the Veyron and much slower than the Koenigsegg.

The tires make no difference you say? Being stubborn? Ok, then let's add the much improved Michelin Super Sport to our list.

And look; a technically inferior MP4-12C defying the laws of physics have entered our list! How can this be?!?! Let's panic!!!!!

Yes the Huayra pulls 1.5g on the skidpad and a little more on banked corners. The biggest difference is in the tires as the Zonda F with Pilot Sport 2 pulled 1.2g and the Clubsport with it's Pilot Sport Cup pulls 1.4g. This is partly how they managed to get past the CCX (1.3g on PS2) in the EVO/Pagani administered "test" at the Ring despite being beaten in all objective tests. Unless Pirelli has stirred up a special mix designed for testing purposes the Agera R should be a little faster.

An important point to be made though is how much credibility can you give these types of tests when Nissan and Chevrolet can beat them both by setting up camp at the Ring, seat a F1 driver, use a softer compound and god knows what else. It's worrying when a car like the MP4-12C beats them by simply swapping tires to Super Sports and this "small" detail goes unnoticed by the so called objective testers. If the EVO/Pagani test showed us anything it's that even the supposedly old Enzo is still competitive if you run it on Cups while Top Gear would have you believe it's the car that's more than a second slower than the CCX and Zonda F Clubsport on their short track. At some point it all becomes a little bit absurd and I believe they've passed that point a long time ago. If they were really serious about testing the cars then the only way to do it is on comparable tires with the same driver on the same track on the same day. At the very least they could clearly indicate what types of tires they're using.

As you says, tires make it so difficult to compare things.

From my own cars - and experience I can tell you - a 997 GT3 3.8 with street tires will beat any GT2RS in heavy rain - if the GT2RS is equipped with the michelin sport tires. It really depends a lot on tires..

To be fully transparent top gear should do once the tet in he dry..and once in the wet..I bet you the differences in the wet are a lot bigger.

Nonetheless, the Pagani did it remarkably well..and they deserve the credit for it. Although I dont like the flashy design, Im happy that car manufacturer not run by accountants can serioulsly challenge the big ones..and that in itself - in 2013 - who would have thought this could be possible?

First off, not meaning to be pedantic elhimiel but can I ask where you where you got that tyre information from and can you prove it is accurate?

And second, you and I know that unless lets say a magazine gets hold of all these cars at the same time and then puts them onto the same rubber at the same track then there is always going to be the tyre element that comes into play.

The problem is that manufacturers at this level are in partnership with their tyre suppliers. They will argue that their cars are optimised to run on certain tyres and how can we argue with that.

The only real test is between cars that you and I can walk into a dealer and order with what every options that manufacturer offers. As long as the cars are street legal then the tyres should not be highlighted as a contributing factor. You might as well say that that car is faster because its suspension design is better designed therefore its times should be ignored.

Don’t forget, as important as tyres are they are only one element in a very complex machine that determines how fast a car will go. You only have to look to F1(where construction regulations are massively strict and the cars look almost the same) which runs on a control tyre to see a classic example of the difference in performance.

This time seems quick considering on a recent evo track test the mclaren 12c 102.8 was only 0.3 secs slower than the pagani 102.5

Yeah but that was on a different track where the layout helped to equalize things

I'm going to add a little bit of confusion here; the McLaren mp4-12c uses P ZERO

Ok so all the Davids uses a special blend of P Zero then. Interesting. SS and P Zero are supposed to be much closer so the Italians must've been busy stirring the pot in the lab.

The 458 was almost three seconds slower than the MP4-12C on the old Pilot Sports and just about dead even on the Super Sports.

At this pace in the tire development who ever sets the most recent time "wins". The best way to build a fast hyper car is to let it sit in the garage until Michelin or Pirelli have produced the results, then lap it, then watch it get beaten by a Porsche running a fresh set of tires three years later.

actually, the Gumpert was ALSO on Pirelli P-Zero Corsa System tyres.. there was a very brief shot of the tyres (just after hammond mentions the 250k price tag) and you can clearly see "corsa" on the sidewall.

And also, i dont think the Pagani Zonda Roadster F was on Pilot Sport Cup tyres. i reckon it was on PS2 tyres, the difference in lap time being the extra 50hp.
