If these rumours about Hulk's contract are true than it is his own stupid fault. He clearly knows he is a good player, he's young and he must of known one day that a big club would come calling for him.

Not with an £80M buy out clause they won't.

Erm, I'll do my best.

When Hulk was bought he would've been seen by some as a bit of a risk, could go either way, he could progress into a world class player or he could not, so Porto were taking a risk by signing him.

By implementing a buy-out clause then they protect themselves, if he does turn out to be world class then they know the absolute minimum price they will get for him should he wish to terminate his contract early. If he does wish to terminate his contract early then obviously Porto will be compensated for the loss of his services to the tune of £80M, pretty greedy if you ask me but there you go, Football is a business after all!

However, if he flops then they're pretty much stuck with him for the duration of his contract, so Hulk is protected too.

But with the size of Hulk's buy out clause, it is pretty much just pure greed from Porto.

Hope that makes sense!

Not exclusive to any leagues, completely club and normally player related.

I can understand why clubs do it, when you've taken the risk, hours and hours of work and research before committing to buy a player your hoping is going to help contribute to turn your clubs performance around and then some Billionaire Russian wants to take him off you, you're going to want to protect your investment.

Villas-Boas has approved a decision to cash in on Luka Modric’s desire to leave the club and is also prepared to sell Rafael van der Vaart — despite his popularity with supporters — to raise further funds.

Now this I would like to see, Dempsey was incredible for Fulham last season and would fit in well at Anfield.

It warms my heart to see the words "29-year-old United States star" in a British paper about football, and NOT the NFL. I'm so glad to see Dempsey succeed at the highest levels. Even if I'd rather walk alone, it'll be good to see him play for a big club. Well, used to be a big club.

Very funny.

Dempsey to me is one of those players who is like a fine wine, he will only get better with age. He makes good decisions and is a clinical finisher. Anything around £10M is a fair price for him and I'd love to see it happen.

I think Dempsey is a bargain at $10m. I hope Liverpool get him, my brother in law is a Liverpool supporter and likes Dempsey a lot.
