Ring rust for sure on Mayhems side...you see him say "Im just tired" right after the fight to his corner men...

But overall great night of fights...the Diego Brandao vs Dennis Bermudez fight was REALLY good...!!!

Here's my admittedly presumptive and perhaps unfairly judgmental guess: Jason wanted to win this so badly, he over-trained, didn't taper soon enough, came into weight-cutting already fatigued, and didn't have anyone strong enough on his squad to keep him from making this mistake.

He's got lots of experience, and with that comes pride. There was a ton of that playing a part in these last few weeks, plus the pressure of nearly an entire country of fans wanting and expecting Jason to defend national honor VS a Brit, and all of this came together to give him motivation to ensure he got the job done. The problem is, when you're not strict enough with your prep, and you over-train, and don't taper early enough, not only does it bring your body into the event in a fatigued state (so you're not fresh and capable of functioning at your peak), this also creates a chain reaction beginning with a fatigued state while you're cutting. Muscles are starved for nutrients already trying to heal because you didn't cut the workouts down, and instead of feeding them, you starve them further to make sure you don't come in heavy to the last 48hrs before weigh-ins. Then of course, you dehydrate the starved, fatigued body to succeed at the scales in those last 2 days and...at that point, you've made weight, but you are completely screwed. You've created a no-win scenario, and treated your body like a prisoner rather than a king going into battle. Fortune favors the well-prepared, and in this example, lady luck is not only laughing at you in pity, it's probable she's calling you a damned fool and flipping you the bird.

If my guess is correct, this is a tragic mistake made by a great and highly experienced fighter---and most importantly his camp. Actually, this may be a little unfair in the eyes of some--and far be it for me to judge from the outside, so I apologize if I'm wrong, but if the prep was mismanaged, I'd put that on the camp and coach over Jason. The fighter has to be led and managed smartly, he can't be expected to make the management and calendar decisions coming up to show time. He has far too much on his mind.

This was an embarrassing, frustrating and sad display for such an accomplished and great fighter. It's not too late to make up for it, but the problems need to be identified, rectified and the next bout has to be handled completely differently. And please, just for extra excellence, get some stand-up work done with a top boxing coach too. I'd normally complain that Bisping leaves himself open by dropping the hands during combo's, but Jason's hands were downright slopping--and the head dropping during the overhands exposed him to hooks, uppercuts and didn't allow him to keep his eyes on-target to follow up lead-in strikes---which he didn't. This aspect of his performance had nothing to do with fatigue, it had everything to do with quality stand-up training.
