Some news from around MLB.

Carl Pavano defeated the Red Sox by allowing one run over six innings in the Target Field opener.

Minnesota won 5-2. The one run against Pavano came on a David Ortiz double to the wall in left, but that ball should have been caught by Delmon Young. On the other hand, Pavano was fortunate that Mike Cameron’s bid for a homer went just foul down the left-field line. The ump made the right call on the field, then went to replay to confirm it. He also managed to pick off Marco Scutaro in front of a Dustin Pedroia double in the first. Pavano has opened the season 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA. Apr. 12 - 7:15 pm et

Sources tell Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com that Jimmy Rollins has a Grade 2 calf strain.

Such an injury would normally require a stint on the disabled list, but we should have a clearer picture about his timetable after he undergoes an MRI on Tuesday. If Rollins is forced to go on the disabled list, Wilson Valdez would likely draw the majority of starts at shortstop with Shane Victorino leading off. Apr. 12 - 9:38 pm et

Adam Wainwright went eight innings and combined with Jason Motte on a shutout of the Astros on Monday.

If the first eight days have been any indication, Wainwright and Tim Lincecum might duel for a Cy Young Award again this year. Wainwright has started 2-0 with a 1.20 ERA. He allowed six hits, walked one and struck out seven today. Apr. 12 - 7:00 pm et

Jayson Werth said he left Monday's game against the Nationals for precautionary reasons.

"I'll be fine," said Werth, who exited Monday's game due to a sore left hip flexor. He can safely be considered day-to-day. Apr. 12 - 8:00 pm et

A source familiar with the talks tells Jon Heyman of SI.com that the $180 million contracts handed out to Mark Teixeira and Joe Mauer are considered "mere starting points" for a contract extension with Prince Fielder.

If that's the case, they might as well kiss him goodbye, especially with Scott Boras as his representative. That's saying nothing of another source, who told Heyman that Fielder is looking for about $200 million over eight years. In other words, the biggest contract ever aside from Alex Rodriguez. Fielder, who turns 26 in May, will be a free agent after the 2011 season. Apr. 12 - 5:11 pm et

Yeah!

Houston Astros vs. St. Louis Cardinals - Recap - April 12, 2010 - ESPN

How was it? Big Albert had 4 RBIs in the effort! He already has 5 HRs!!

How is it to have the best player in baseball?

Once upon a time, I knew that feeling.

Don't the Mariners know better than to sign Milton Bradley??

They get what they deserve with that nut job.

It was just as special as any other opening day. One heck of a game played. The sea of red never ceases to amaze. Pujols and the Cards are looking great, Carpenter got roughed up the night before but they rebounded very nicely. Mcgwire got a standing ovation as was expected from the STL fans. It is a great baseball town, I highly recommend attending a game if you are ever traveling through.
