Angels Pitcher Adenhart Killed In Crash

In yet another stunning example of how fragile and short life can be, 22-year old Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart was killed last night in a hit-and-run car crash in Fullerton, CA.

Just a few hours before his death, I sat in Angel Stadium and watched Nick pitch 6 scoreless innings against the Oakland A's. He got in trouble a few times and we were a bit hard on the kid. But then he pitched out of it brilliantly and we gave him a standing ovation. At that moment he looked like he didn't have a care in the world. We watch these young men play and we can sometimes forget that they are people and are susceptible to all of the harsh realities of the world. I am left shaking my head this morning. What a loss.

This is truly a sad day for Angel fans.

I snapped these pictures of Nick at the game last night:

As I sit here this morning after hearing this tragic news, I can't help but reflect on how precious each moment we have in life is. If nothing else, Nick's death makes me want to live a more full, righteous and giving life. I hope that his family can find comfort and solice during this incredibly difficult time.

Here are the latest details on Nick's death.

One of my co-workers is a big Angels fan and was at the game as well... its been depressing this morning. I'm glad they caught the guy who did it. I hate hearing this stuff there have been WAY too many deaths lately where the victims weren't doing anything wrong.

For us OC guys, this hits way too close to home. And for those of us at the ballpark last night it is truly surreal.

In reaction to Adenhart's tragic death, the Angels have post-poned the game against Oakland tonight. The right move. But I was also looking forward to commiserating with other Angel fans tonight. What a sad morning that will now be a very difficult night.
