Hey all,

I'm driving up to SF next weekend and would like to take the coastal route - any suggestions?

Also, i'll be in SF for 2 days and then Napa for one night and a day or so, any suggestions on where to stay / which wineries to go to?

I'm thinking of booking the Fairmont hotel, i stayed there when i was 7. Seems to be decently priced and located in Union Sq.

Any other suggestions?

 

Driving along one of the best route's in the world is certainly not a yawn!

 

I just spoke to Tuuner about this. We agreed that the Northern route is best when you're in a Corolla "S".

 

The Post Ranch Inn in in Carmel is a nice stop after a long drive from LA up Highway 1. It really is a unique place and definitely one of the nicest places to stay in the Western US. The restaurant at Post Ranch is excellent as well.

You can also work in a tour of Hearst Castle, which is about 4 hours north of LA. Usually, tour #1, allows you to see everything you need to see. Make sure to reserve your tour well ahead of time on the website, and make time for the IMAX movie before the tour.

As far as the City goes, its hard to go wrong with the Ritz (traditional) or the Four Seasons (newer) to stay. Here is a link from Chowhounds to give you some ideas for where you might want to have dinner.

I think the fairmont is gonna be where i stay - $140 a night isn't bad and i haven't stayed there since i was a nipper so am looking forward to it.

Joxy Poo - got the 335 back - don't be jealous that i'll be going along the coast with the top down, music blaring and all under the heat of the sun whilst you stare out of your window whilst it snows, recalling the memory of your once running 964 RS and how fun it was to partake in a roadtrip...

For Napa, the Villagio in Yountville my favorite place to stay. They are currently advertising some pretty good "romance" packages.

For wineries.......well, that is an entire thread in and of itself. Depends what you want out of your tour/tasting experience.....

 

I'd rather have a temporarily non-functional real sports car than going to the gay capital of the world in a cute convertible . . .

 

I could type for hours on this subject, but I usually find the info on Chowhound to be very good for winery and restaurant recs.
