935 from the past
Back in the 70's and 80's the drivers of race cars and the drivers of offshore race boats were much closer than today. Many of the race car drivers competeted in offshore races and vice versa. Even Roger Penske himself raced and won the Benihana race off Point Pleasant, New Jersey.
But one of the most colorful was Preston Henn. He started first in boats and then moved into cars. He was driving in the 24 hours of Daytona when he noticed that AJ Foyt's ride had broken down and he was packing up to leave the track. Preston invited him to join the team and AJ accepted.
Now while all this was going on, Preston's hired gun for the race, Bob Wollek was out on the track doing his job. When he came into the pit and found out who the new team member was, he went ballistic, to put it mildly. He was not about to give a car in the lead to AJ and let him claim the victory. Final result, the team won the 24 hour race and went on to compete again in Miami, in the IMSA endurance race there.
Below are some shots of the Preston Henn, Swap Shop, team pit. Since I knew Preston from offshore boat racing, I was able to be right there to watch the new dynamics of the two team members, Foyt and Wollek.
The first shot is of Preston in his boat, showing that even though he used hired guns for endurance racing in his cars, he was no slouch in his own right when it came to speed.
