Thinking about building a 944 track car . . .
#12
Jox,
I have owned 3 different 944's and built an 89S2 club racer. My best advice is to buy one thst is already done. There is currently one for sale on 6speed that is extremely tempting at $16,500. No expense spared, all the stuff I would do to it and even a 968 motor. It has 250hp and weighs 2600 lbs. THAT is the car to buy right now.

this is a terrible idea, they are truely awful cars, its going to break constantly and parts are a pain in the ass sometimes, they suck to work on and it shares more characteristics with a civic than a porsche, imo this is the worst idea ever, a s-10 blazer is a better track car
The 944 is the "other" childhood dream car of mine and I have been toying with the idea of building a proper track car out of one.
Aesthetics are obviously not top priority when I look for one, as I'd probably rip out most of what is nice to replace it with bad-ass race-y parts, intimidating red buttons, sweet fire extinguishers and light seats in bold colors, but it needs to be mechanically good.
What are some things to look for? Weak points? Is it as reliable as my 911? And what year do I want for this sort of thing - any weight/mechanical differences between, say, an '85 and a '90? There are about ten or so for sale ranging between the equivalent of 10 to 25K USD, and most seem to have around 300 hp or so. Will I want more, and how much of a hassle is there to get to ... oh, I dunno, 350?
Educate me please!

not trying to hinder your sale but they truely are awful cars, theyre underpowered, are outclassed, and can in no way compete with a 911, a 44 will cost 3x more to maintain and doesnt go when you hit the fun pedal, just stick with a flat 6 and save ur self a headache

Disagree--the 944 / 968 is one of the best handling cars ever.
If you want big power, you have to go turbo. That 3.0 is a sweet motor but it's basically DONE. It's very high compression already and there's just so much you can do to an aspirated 3.0 four. The only reliability issue I know of with those is the water pump. Later trannies were built for big ass power so it can probably take being hopped up. The diff, I dunno. My avatar is me maxing a 968 back in 96 or so.
