2012 24 Hrs of LeMans DeltaWing Prototype

This is the actual 1st full size prototype of the Highcroft Racing DeltaWing LeMans car. Highcroft Racing was awarded the "Garage 56" slot at LeMans next year for the DeltaWing.Garage 56 is reserved for future automotive technology. The car will weight approximately 1,047 lbs and be powered by a 1.6 liter 4 cylinder turbo gasoline engine w/ around 300hp.EMCO Gears out of Chicago was just awarded the contract to build the 5 speed tranny. It will weight 70 lbs. No engine supplier has been named yet.The tranny will have torque vectoring to the rear wheels. The only downforce is generated by ground effects aerodynamics via the undertray beneath the car.It will be kidda crazy seeing this thing fly around the Circuit de la Sarthe next June.Is this the future of professional sports car racing....stay tuned. Thanks. PalBay

Well, it's certainly ugly. Looks like a cock and balls.

Okay, ignoring the fact that it looks like a frank'n'beans, all I can think of when I see that design is...

UNDERSTEEEEEEEEER.

How the hell can that thing have any front end grip with such a thin front track? Balanced out with the massive rear track and no frontal aerodynamic aids that thing is just going to go straight on in every corner. It's even got a tail fin fergodssake!

Wondered the same thing when I saw it at Road Atlanta. This is their responce:

"Locking propensity of the un-laden front wheel at corner entry is greatly reduced due to virtually no lateral load transfer with the narrow front track/wide rear track layout, steered wheel “scrub drag” moment is virtually zero greatly increasing tire utilization and reducing mid turn understeer."

??????? Anyone with a mechanical engineering degree care to explain?

Because of the narrow front track, there is less weight transfer from side to side when cornering, which means the weight at the front of the car will be more evenly distributed over the front wheels.

When you see a car overcook it into a corner and understeer, it's usually because the inside wheel doesn't have enough force being applied to it to remain in contact with the pavement while the outside wheel has too much force and overcomes the friction generated by the tire.

With the load more evenly distributed while cornering, both front tires should have more of a contact patch with the pavement and therefore, more grip.

.....Or something like that.
