Former commentator and broadcaster Murray Walker has been highly impressed by rookie Paul di Resta over the first three races of 2011 and now predicts a Mercedes Grand Prix drive for the Scot.
25-year-old Di Resta, who hails from Uphall in West Lothian, made the full-time switch to Formula 1 this year after racing to the DTM title with Mercedes-Benz in 2010.
“Paul di Resta has to be my number one of the newcomers, indeed I think everybody’s number one of the newcomers, because he’s done brilliantly with Force India,” Walker said in a video feature on the BBC Sport website.
“Points in both of his first two races, he finished 11th and just out of the points in China and he’s beaten his very quick team-mate Adrian Sutil.
“He’s very much a man of future, in my opinion, and one of the big teams is going to be signing him up before very much longer – maybe Mercedes.”
Following the first trio of ‘flyaway’ events, it is also widely known that di Resta has received much praise from Norbert Haug, Vice President for Motorsport at Mercedes.

Anthony Hamilton, father of Lewis and now manager of Paul di Resta, is confident that the Scottish rookie could be selected for a Mercedes drive in future seasons. Having switched to Formula 1 from DTM, where he won the 2010 title for the silver arrows, the West Lothian man is now driving for Mercedes-powered Force India.
Mercedes’ works team line-up is already sealed until the end of 2012, although di Resta is now being hotly tipped as a possible replacement for Michael Schumacher.
“I would like to think there is an interest,” Hamilton told The Daily Telegraph. “We’ve not spoken to anyone but, for sure, Paul is a Mercedes protégé and Norbert (Haug, Vice President of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport) has said some very complimentary things about him. I’m just really proud of him.
“He has made a fantastic start and, more importantly, he has done it in the right way. He has not over-driven; he has brought the car home every time and delivered points. Certainly he will make a great replacement for someone at a top team.”
When quizzed over the same topic, di Resta was unable to share such varied views:
“Obviously I am close to Mercedes,” he began. “They have had a huge influence on my career and I’m very grateful to them. It is great that people are talking but, at the same time, I have got to keep progressing.
“Force India have given me a great opportunity and delivered what they said they would. Hopefully I am delivering what they hoped I would deliver for the team.”
