Thats a good way to get boned in fantasy points. I can't see Red Bull intentionally sandbagging it all season though in Qualifying.

 

Not just RBR - everyone will be doing whatever it takes to save soft tires for the race.

 

I agree, if I were in charge of an F1 team...I'd want my drivers qualifying on the harder compounds and saving three sets of the softer compounds for later in the race. However, this strategy only works on tracks where overtaking will be feasible, not a course like Monaco where grid position is vital. Should be interesting though, and sadly it makes qualifying less exciting...unless everyone uses the primes and HRT wins P1 on the options! Ha ha!

There is definitely truth to what Horner said but I don't see any of the top 3 teams taking that big a risk.

 

I can definitely see it. Let's go back to the Chinese GP, where Vettel had a huge gap in qualifying over P2 and P3. What if he went out in Q3 on a set of prime tires and lost 1.5 seconds on that lap (a realistic loss in lap time from the option to the soft)? A 1:35.2 lap time would have put him P7 on the final grid, and with three new sets of soft tires he would have been unstoppable...just like Webber was but with a much better grid advantage. If there are other tracks with similar overtaking possibilities, it's a very realistic idea to qualify on primes and save all the options for the race.

 

Well Pirelli kind of fvcked this up now. Hopefully quali will still be exciting. They need the softs to last longer.

 

It all depends on the track's characteristics for overtaking. Many tracks will still rely on qualifying position, so those tracks will have battles for P1. The idea of a point or two to the pole winner isn't a bad idea, it would really give them motivation to go all out.
