Michael Schumacher is confident that he can help build Mercedes Grand Prix up to championship-winning status, having done the same with Ferrari from 1996. Heading to Shanghai, the silver arrows lie eighth in the Constructors’ Championship with only two points to their name.

“We have spoken about the reasons why a certain performance was not able to be delivered,” Schumacher said in China on Thursday, describing the team’s issues as general as opposed to one specific area of the car.

"That is where we are but in Formula 1 it’s not the first time it has happened to me, that things do not go to expectations; it’s what it is and the only way to go forward is to work off your problems - and that is what we are about to do right now.

“Naturally, between Malaysia and China there is a very short amount of time available and we do not have major upgrades for this event, but will do for other events. It’s actually more about understanding the car and pulling out the true and complete potential. It’s an on-going process, I’m afraid.

“But when the tough get going the going gets tough. Sorry, when the tough get going...you know what I want to say. When the going gets tough the tough get going - I got it right now!”

If anyone can find magic this year, it's Schumi and Brawn.

Finding magic takes tons of money and resources, which I'm not so sure Mercedes is capable of. Their budget last year wasn't nearly enough, and I doubt it will be this year either. RB, McLaren, and Ferrari are the only teams that can constantly improve at rapid pace...
