Mercedes GP Team Principal Ross Brawn has admitted that the World Champion team of 2009 are around currently around a full second slower than they had planned to be, with a significant car upgrade coming for next week’s fourth and final winter test at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya.
Heading back to Spain, the silver arrows lie third overall for most mileage so far although the Englishman admits that their pace must be improved.
“We're about a second off where we want to be, which is at the front, so we've got to find a second in the upgrade which we think we can do,” he explained to BBC Radio 5 live. “But you never know what others will do - we've set out our plan we'll know at Melbourne if it's right.
“We're all intensely competitive and we get more motivated when we're not achieving what we want to achieve. We're sticking to our winter plan and we'll know when we get to Melbourne.”

Ross Brawn is pleased to report that Mercedes GP has now found the one second it was looking for at the final pre-season test session in Barcelona last week, with the team having introduced a raft of significant car updates. However, he also admits that anxiety levels were building as the Brackley-based outfit kept to its original agenda.
The silver arrows’ seemingly much-improved pace – following the planned car upgrade including revised exhausts and radical front wing slots - was best witnessed at the Circuit de Catalunya on Friday, with Michael Schumacher topping the timesheets as team-mate Nico Rosberg lapped third quickest after a short time on-track.
“We have taken a great leap forward,” Team Principal Brawn explained to Germany’s Frankfurter Allgemeine. “Our reference was our lap times from the test in Barcelona three weeks before, but I don’t know how much better the others were and whether they have already shown all they have.
“We have improved by the second we were looking for, but I can’t say whether this progress is sufficient or not – I will in Australia.”
When asked how he was coping prior to last week’s test, the Englishman replied: “It was very difficult. You must all remember that the team is constantly working to keep to the plan and, in such situations, the temptation is there to fall into changing it and wasting resources. I admit, I was a little nervous as to whether our plan would work.”
