More likely: Nissan/Renault lost face when news came out that they were looking to AMG to provide engines (Infiniti prepares AMG powered models - Top Speed, among others) for their high-performance line. This is an easy, cheap way to make Infiniti engines look good/like tech leaders for (probably) far less money than an actual high-po engine program.
