Porsche works driver Joerg Bergmeister claims pole position
Stuttgart. At the Daytona 24 Hours, the Porsche Riley fielded by Flying Lizard Motorsports takes off from pole position. During qualifying for the legendary long distance classic, Porsche works driver Joerg Bergmeister (Germany), who shares the winning car from 2009 with his factory pilot teammate Patrick Long (USA) as well as Americans Seth Neiman and Johannes van Overbeek, turned the fastest lap on the Daytona International Speedway. At the same time, the Daytona winner from 2003 set a new lap record. In the GT class, Dominik Farnbacher (Germany) clinched the quickest time with TRG Racing’s 911 GT3 Cup. Positions three to six also went to teams fielding sports cars from Zuffenhausen.
“This pole is an enormous motivation for the whole team. They’ve worked very hard preparing this car to find a perfect set-up,” says Joerg Bergmeister. “For this reason it’s good that we start from the very front, even though your grid position is certainly not a crucial factor at such a long race. But it was important for us to see that we definitely have the necessary speed.”
“In the infield the car set-up has to be right or you lose lots of time,” said Dominik Farnbacher, GT class winner of 2005. “I found I could go fast without overdriving the car. My team has a huge amount of experience in Daytona with the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. This is the advantage that we’ll be using in the race.”
The 24 hours race starts on Saturday at 15.30 hours local time (21.30 hours CET).
