Is Alonso Really A Villain?

Here is an interesting article from this week's Autosport.

What are your thoughts?

That guy looks like Paddy Lowe of Mclaren. That's my thought.

I started watching F1 only a few years ago when I was in college but it was at the peak of Alonso's time a Renault. Ironically, I didn't like him much then but he's grown on me a lot and I've often wondered why the British have so much disdain for him.

He doesn't pull dangerous moves/passes like Schumacher (when he tried to run Rubens right into the wall this season) and he's a fairly honest, consistent racer. He's made me a bigger fan of Ferrari that I was previously and I had hoped either he or Webber would take the WDC.

From reading the article - I'm guessing that the magazines feel pressure to get fans to rally behind British drivers like Hamilton and Button as a means of helping sales. Otherwise, surely you can't have that many British publications forcing personal agendas can you?

He's one of the best drivers on the grid and I respect him for that. Is he a bad guy? No, I'm sure he's actually a nice chap. Is he a villain? Only according to British media.

I think Alonso got a bad rap from a lot of people because of his 2007 season with McLaren. Everyone was rooting for the rookie golden boy Hamilton, expecting him to win the WDC in his first year. When that didn't happen, most of Hamilton's fans (myself included, admittedly) placed the blame on Alonso's shoulders for Hamilton's loss, despite several blatant errors on the Brit's part at the end of that season.

Ahh, refreshing, a McLaren fan I can have a rational conversation with!

Alonso is indeed a villain... a five foot-tall, monobrowed, heavily-accented villain. Look for him in the next Bond flick.
