Vettel ends Montreal Friday on top - Formula 1 news - GPUpdate.net

Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull Racing moved atop the timesheets in Canada's second free practice session on Friday. Fernando Alonso and Nico Rosberg ensured that Ferrari and Mercedes also made the top three in Montreal as Lewis Hamilton led the way for McLaren from seventh position.

There were remarkably few incidents on the semi-street Circuit de Gilles Villeneuve on Friday as Formula 1 made its return to North America following a year's sabbatical in 2009. Ambient temperatures of 21°C (70°F) made for comfortable viewing for the sell-out crowd although dark clouds threatened throughout.

Remaining on the topic of weather, light drops of rain fell in the morning's 90-minute practice period although the track remained chiefly dry in the afternoon. However, significant showers hit the Île Notre-Dame venue on Thursday and more are expected on Saturday night as well as into Sunday.

Jarno Trulli was by far the biggest loser of the day on Friday. Having lost significant amounts of time in the morning, the Italian's Lotus remained rooted to the garage after an electrical problem caused the gearbox to remain jammed in fifth gear; never blessed with luck in Canada, Jarno did manage to return to the track with just under 17 minutes to go and finished the day 22nd, ahead of both Virgin Racing cars.

It was a less than perfect day for Virgin, too, as Lucas di Grassi had completed only three laps in the morning before rejoining the track and pulling off at Turn 6 on his next out-lap. The quickest team car, that of Timo Glock, ended the afternoon period 4.6 seconds off the leading pace.

At the sharp end, Vettel set the benchmark in the form of 1:16.877, with Alonso moving the Ferrari to within 86 thousandths of the German's best effort. Behind Rosberg, Webber and Massa, Adrian Sutil's Force India made the top six as Hamilton, Kubica, Schumacher and Liuzzi completed the first ten.

The second McLaren of Champion Jenson Button was 11th and a second off the pace, despite his team generally being tipped as favourites due to their speed-gaining f-duct system; however, as always, fuel loads remain unknown on a Friday.

Although onlookers were surprised to see no cars making serious contact with the ever-threatening concrete walls which characterise the island-based circuit, a number of runners brushed Turn 13's 'Wall of Champions' and Turn 8 continued to be a populars cene for grass cutting.

Michael Schumacher experienced a second close call of the day at the hairpin; having almost run into Vitaly Petrov's Renault in the morning, the Mercedes driver narrowly escaped contact with compatriot Vettel's rapid Red Bull in the afternoon.

Drivers were unable to attack the top times in the second half of the session as teams concentrated on longer stints with heavier fuel loads, coupled with the use of the green-striped Super Soft compound tyres. Bridgestone's Super Soft (Option) and Medium (Prime) tyres are on offer this weekend.

I'm glad I have Vettel on my fantasy team but I was expecting more from McLaren.

Also, Schumi ought to be driving like a mad man this weekend. I expect big things from him. Either a big success or a catastrophic crash.
