Button: McLaren still behind the Bulls

From PlanetF1:

Despite claiming the 1-2 finish in Turkey, Jenson Button concedes McLaren are still languishing behind Red Bull Racing out on track.

McLaren, putting pressure on Red Bull throughout Sunday's grand prix, benefitted when Sebastian Vettel attempted an ill-advised pass on his team-mate Mark Webber for the lead. Colliding with Webber, Vettel was put out of the grand prix while Webber dropped to third place as he had to pit for repairs.

Red Bull's woes proved to be McLaren's blessing as Lewis Hamilton and Button grabbed the top two positions and held them all the way through the chequered flag and McLaren's second 1-2 result of the Championship.

Button and Hamilton's Turkish achievements saw them climb to second and third in the Drivers' Championship while McLaren took the lead off Red Bull in the Constructors' race. But despite their improvement in the standings, Button reckons they are still some way behind Red Bull on the track.

"We're definitely behind the Red Bulls at the moment but overall the car feels good and we're definitely going in the right direction," Button said.

"As everyone saw last year McLaren is a team that can change things around. By the end of last season they had one of the quickest cars out there. Everyone throughout the team is working as hard as they can and I have no doubt we will get there."

Button revealed that he's not surprised that it's Red Bull's Webber who himself and Hamilton are chasing for the lead in the Drivers' standings, despite the Aussie having only claimed his first-ever F1 victory last season, which was his eighth in F1.

"I don't think so at all," he said. "Mark's a great driver and is fantastic at getting the most out of the car when it matters.

"He's also proved that he's more than capable of taking a car from pole to chequered flag whilst keeping a calm head along the way and just driving the car. Monaco was certainly a great example of that."

But while Monaco was an example of Webber's improvement, Turkey was a sign of Michael Schumacher's as the German claimed fourth place, equaling his best result of his comeback season.

The seven-time World Champ and his team, though, are still well off the pace in both Championship races, although Button reckons the time may come when they close the gap.

"A team that has Ross Brawn and Michael Schumacher in it should certainly never be underestimated," he said.
