Jenson Button's McLaren headed the timesheets in the second free practice session at Istanbul Park on Friday. Championship leader Mark Webber finished within a tenth of the top spot although both he and Red Bull Racing team-mate Sebastian Vettel suffered technical problems, with the Australian pulling off the circuit as a result.
It was a beautiful day for weather in Turkey on Friday, as ambient afternoon temperatures reached as high as 32°C (90°F) in the city which spans both Europe and Asia; at Istanbul Park, which is located on the Asian side, the track surface was up to 50°C (122°F) by the time the excitement began in the second 90-minute practice period.
Adrian Sutil was able to rejoin the action, despite having suffered a large accident on the exit of Turn 8 in the morning which took off both of the Force India's front wheels as well as its wing. Somewhat amazingly, mechanics were able to repair the damage on time to allow the German to wind up a respectable 11th fastest.
There were no such incidents in Practice 2 although the infamous corner did throw up its usual high number of dramatic moments; Kamui Kobayashi's were some of the most spectacular, not least his spin after missing the third apex just five minutes in before another moment later on in the session.
Vitaly Petrov also struggled to trouble the third of four apexes, as did Vitantonio Liuzzi (who spun and ran wide in separate moments), 3-time Istanbul winner Felipe Massa and Karun Chandhok.
Massa, who finished the day tenth quickest and nine tenths of a second off Ferrari team-mate Fernando Alonso, also joined Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton in running wide at Turn 1 as wind speeds of three and a half metres per second continued to catch out various members of the field.
Mark Webber may have run slightly off-line on the exit of Turn 10 although the Red Bull RB6 continued to demonstrate its phenomenal downforce and grip levels, expected to be on pole position again should reliability be on the team's side tomorrow.
Reliability is a worry for the Milton Keynes team, however, as it suffered more than its fair share at the start of the season; more gremlins crept in today, with Vettel having endured water pressure problems in the garage before Webber was the victim of an unsuspected and sudden Renault engine failure on the exit of Turn 2
Having intentionally rolled backwards on to a service road and out of harm's way, the Australian could be seen to furiously gesticulate to race marshals who, after some deliberation, placed a fire extinguisher under the car's right-front wheel in order to prevent it from rolling further.
At the sharp end, Button's best effort of 1:28.280 ensured that the 2009 winner finished fractionally under a tenth up on the halted Webber, with respective team-mates Vettel (who celebrates his 50th F1 race this weekend) and Hamilton third and fourth. Fernando Alonso leads the Ferrari charge from fifth, with the team celebrating its 800th Grand Prix, ahead of the two Mercedes as Nico Rosberg leads Michael Schumacher for the first time in the longer wheelbase version of the MGP W01.
