Five F1 Champions have seen a son of theirs enter the sport. However, the Hill family is unique in that it is the only one to have produced father and son title-winners since the championship began in 1950. Now, more history could be in the making as the next generation continues to rise through the rankings. 19-year-old Joshua Hill, son of Damon and grandson of the late Graham, talked to GPUpdate.net's Stijn Keuris.
Joshua, tell us a bit about your career so far
I have done a year of Formula Ford and a year before that I drove in the Ginetta Junior Series. It has been three years now since I started racing and it's going very well.
I've always been interested in racing; I started with a small local karting championship and wanted to take it further.
How does it feel to have a Formula 1 World Champion as a father?
It's great to have him, you're not going to ignore a World Champion's advice! It's really good to have his support. He encourages me to go on and advises me with things to do with the car and on race weekends, but he lets me do it the way I want it as well, he respects my opinion - that's a great thing to have, not being told what to do.
Do you find your surname helps with the commercial side of things too?
It's definitely an advantage. Everybody is having difficulties finding sponsors lately, so it helps quite a lot.
How will you aim to progress from here?
If you've got to this level and you don't want to stay in Formula Ford, then you've got to aim for the top, whatever it is; you've got to aim for the top forms of motorsport, although of course I'd love to be in Formula 1.
But could that be tricky, considering you've not collected any experience from the traditional first tier, karting?
My father did motorbikes and after that he competed in Formula Ford - and look what he achieved…
