'Rome confirms Formula 1 contract' - Formula 1 news - GPUpdate.net
The Formula 1 circus could soon be travelling to the city of Rome for a street race in the Italian capital. Course planner Maurizio Flammini has explained to Italian television network Sky Italia that a deal has been 'done and signed' with F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone.
Ecclestone's Formula One Management (FOM, commercial rights holders for the sport), however, is yet to confirm the Grand Prix in the city; according to Flammini, the race through the streets of Rome would not replace the Italian Grand Prix, held at Monza, but instead become the second event for the country on the F1 schedule.
"We think the Rome Grand Prix would be very important and we are in favour of it," city mayor Gianni Alemanno commented. "It is not true that it's an alternative to Monza - Monza is a Grand Prix on the circuit and the Rome Grand Prix will run parallel to Monza, it is not a replacement."
Plans for a Rome event were first mentioned in mid-May, when the legendary city presented a possible street circuit, although Ecclestone had seemingly since drifted away from the possibility, explaining in early October that a number of other new races are in the pipeline. Italy last hosted two F1 races in one season back in 2006, when Imola held the final San Marino Grand Prix to date.
